“I grew up in Brighton, England, where I lived until I moved to Toronto, Canada for university. Coming from the unofficial “gay capital” of the UK, I was lucky to have spent my childhood around queer people and queer culture. Nonetheless, most people I knew were still straight and cisgender and it wasn’t until I moved to Canada that I had the opportunity to explore and understand my identity as a genderqueer person.

I am no closer to understanding what gender actually is, or what it means, but I have realised that I don’t actually need to know what it is. I know who I am and that is enough for me. I hope that one day people learn to approach others with respect and openness, seeing them for who they know themselves to be. I will continue to advocate for transgender equality and support educational efforts about gender diversity.”
