Georgelie Berry / Haiti, Justin Anantawan
“My name is Georgelie Berry (she/her), and I am from Haiti. I come from a modest family of three girls, of which I am the oldest. Growing up in Haiti, I found myself facing judgments and labels due to my gender expression. From a young age, whispers and disapproving looks accompanied me, sometimes labeling me as a ‘tomboy’ for my sporty preferences considered reserved for men. These words resonated with me, sometimes pushing me to change my voice or clothing style to fit others’ expectations.
Despite these pressures, I always let my innate leadership and creativity shine, standing out both at school and in my budding career. Criticisms only fueled my determination, as I knew my life belonged to me, and I refused to conform to standards that did not represent me.
In 2019, I made the decision to leave everything behind to start a new life in Canada, where I could finally be fully myself. Challenges arose as a francophone in Ontario, obstacles such as housing, language barriers, and limited access to mental health services dotted my path. But fueled by my inner strength and resilience, I turned to different organizations like FrancoQueer to help me in my integration process. I also got involved in several volunteer activities to gain Canadian experience and contribute to the development of my new community.
Recognized today as a passionate and dedicated activist for minority rights, I have always felt called to defend the most vulnerable and fight against discrimination. Every trial on my path has strengthened my determination to promote equality for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, with each victory fueling the flame burning within me for a more just and inclusive society.
My dream is simple yet powerful: a world where love triumphs over hate, where everyone can fully live their truth without fear or repercussions. I commit with passion and determination to work towards this vision, to build a future where diversity is celebrated and where everyone finds their place, free to be who they truly are.“
