Fellowship Winners / Worldwide
We are very proud and excited to announce the winners of the first Where Love is Illegal Fellowship! They are Camille Farrah Lenain, Kwasi Darko, and Anton Shebetko!
The Where Love Is Illegal Fellowship is designed to support LGBTQI+ identifying photographers to contribute to the narratives that define queer communities. Three photographers have been awarded up to $5000 to create original photographic work and record testimonies about the queer experience in Europe, Africa, or the Middle East. The inaugural fellowship was made possible thanks to the generous support of Vans, we are grateful for their belief in us. The stories they collect will be shared during Pride 2022.
The fellows are :
Camille Farrah Lenain is a French-Algerian documentary and portrait photographer who grew up in Paris, studied Photography at l’ESA in Brussels and at ICP in New York City (virtual). She relocated to New Orleans in 2013, where she teaches photography at Tulane University and develops long-term projects with a focus on empathetic portraiture, exploring the notions of representation, collective memory and plural identities. Anton Shebetko is a Ukrainian artist and photographer from Kyiv. He currently lives in Amsterdam. He works closely with LGBTQ + topics, themes of memory, loss of identity, plurality of history, and the role that photography can play in revealing these stories. His extensive research is devoted to the forgotten queer history of Ukraine. His range of projects varies from installations and interventions dedicated to old cruising spots and underground gay resorts in Crimea to more relevant topics such as Ukrainian LGBTQ + soldiers.
